If you would look at the available running watches in the market, you would have to admit that not all running watches are created equal. Some watches are definitely more feature packed than others. This is because there are some features which are not included because of trying to keep the costs low, or the target market of that particular running watch does not seem to mind the feature’s omission.
While you may think that this is a handicap for you, after all most would prefer to have all of the features packed in the running watch, you would be able to find out that some specialization would help in lessening your expenditures, as well as the cluttered data field or menus of the more advanced watches.
Of course, since your running watch would not be a Swiss army knife of features, you would have to select the specialized features that would suit your training. Here are some tips for being able to do so:
For the Extreme conditions runner:
If you are the type who would want to do your running training even in strong winds, heavy rain, and other harsh weather conditions, then your best bet would be to purchase a durable or outdoors type running watch.
These watches would be able to withstand even the harshest of weather situations and would able to function while you train. A drawback is that these running watches would tend to be bulky (to allow for strengthening the frame) and that they may not be as feature rich as their other training counterparts.
As a last note for this type of running watch, you may also want to look at running watches that provide a good backlight technology (such as Timex’s indiglo) if you would really want to train at less than favorable weather conditions.
For Extreme Data Accuracy:
If you are looking for a running watch that would be able to give you the ability to track plenty of data types, then you would definitely enjoy getting a GPS running watch. A GPS running watch uses satellite connections to be able to track your data in the most accurate way possible. A bonus feature is that it would also allow the watch to track other types of information that other watches are not able to do so due to technological limitations.
A drawback would usually be the cost as GPS running watches are definitely more expensive than other simpler, running watches. This is due to the expensive technology that would have to be placed in the watch in order for it to function well.
Of course, there are also running watches that would try to combine these specialized features into a single device. While they are great options, you must first consider if you would really be using all of the features or capabilities.
This is because these types of running watches are usually priced at a higher range and it would just be a waste of money if you would not use them in your running training.
